During my Red or Dead years I used to travel to catwalk shows, trade shows, fabric shows and footwear component shows to visit our licensees and agents and I always seemed to manage to find small funk clubs in places like Milan, Florence, Paris, Berlin and even Zagreb and Belgrade (now there’s a story to tell about doing a fashion show that was opened unbeknown by us, by Milosevic’s wife!). The clubs all seemed to have an openness to records that the UK often didn’t have and I would hear tracks that I had never heard before. I remember sets always starting quite slow and then by the end, the DJs always seemed to be able to crank it up at just the right time to get a mix of all ages going for it (including the Red or Dead posse). Here’s my tribute. It builds from slow groovers to full on funk… If I were a DJ with just a box of 45s at one of those mainland Europe funk clubs that keep the funk flame alive…
