When I started posting these ‘If I were a DJ’ mixes in early March 2020, I didn’t imagine that Northern Soul would get the biggest number of listeners. As we speak, my first Northern Soul mix has had 662 plays, so I had better do another. This music is often over half a century old… that’s pretty ancient. But judging by the comments and the listeners, it is not just 60 plus year old soul “heads” who are listening to the music from their youth but rather a diverse mix of all ages and music tastes (quite a few Techno DJs) from all over the world (Japan, Serbia, Sweden, Russia, Portugal to name a few). Is there another dance music genre that has this durability? These are my second “pull out” of relatively commercial 7”s from my northern cupboards. Twenty two proper dancers! If I were a DJ… playing to a mixed crowd, not just Northern Soul aficionados, who had an ear for soul and were just up for dance.
