This Sunday (May 17th 2020) but for this damned pandemic, it would have been The Urban Village Fete on the Greenwich Peninsula in London, a long standing free multi-arts event that has become one of the city’s most looked forward to events. The food, the traders, the performers, workshops, the talks, the music is so well curated (well I would say this as it was devised, and is curated and produced by HemingwayDesign!). We are going to miss it (but we are delivering The Urban Virtual Fete on 31st May instead, more about that next week) and miss all that dancing to that annual closing set by Gilles Peterson (and especially the crowd pleasing Fela Kuti’s Water No Get Enemy). This is my tribute… If I were a DJ playing afrofunk at the Urban Village Fete and cheekily played a killer record that Gilles Peterson would have opened with in his headline slot…
