I wish I didn’t feel these feelings of anger and sadness surrounding the headlines that have dominated the news as of late. I wanted to turn off my phone in the middle of that horrific 10-min video as I could feel my muscles tensing up in rage as that knee pressed down on that man’s neck. I wanted to skip past the video of a woman in NY using systemic racism as a weapon against a man of colour. But if I shut off my phone or swiped past these videos, I would be no better than the people committing these crimes of hate.
So I’ve allowed myself to feel what I’m feeling, be it negative and full of anger and sadness. And one thing that’s always helped me to explore and express my emotions has been music. This mix isn’t about showing off my ability as a DJ – to be honest, there’s barely any actual mixing done here. This is more about sharing what has been my personal soundtrack to my anger and sadness as a constant witness of injustice, not just in the US, but in my own country as well.
